This article is nearly perfectly parallel to my experience in tech freelance. I have always kept one foot in adjacent fields. Technical writing and project design for not-for-profit orgs' research and educational programs have been a counterbalance to the heavy IT periods. I had a brief foray into private equity right as CoVID made the travel and make deals wheel come unstuck, and the feel since 2020/21 has really become of "it's all just sharks in this pond".

Not sure how to address it from the IT side, or the public|private grant side either. So, I'm leaning back on my third angle, hands on agriculture in a place that is searching for quality help: Japan's rice and high margin produce workforce. Just getting stated, but I had a few years in the fields a little more than 30 years ago, so it's not unknown.

It's pretty different, but the reception from employer, coworker, and community partners is a welcome relief. There's no real sense of avarice, or hustle, other than to get the work done before the sun goes down or before the season is over. The only 'missed deadline' is due to rain when the grain is ready to harvest but too wet.

Hope you find your next lifestyle and a sense of accomplishment in doing it well.
